There were live performances from bands and DJs, artists from across the country had work on display, and break dancers from around the city laying it down on the dance floor.

URBAN ART IN AFRICA

Banksy has been globe trotting for years, you can find his graffiti all over the world, America, Europe, The Middle East, but it seems he’s even been working in Africa. The latest location to appear on the Banksy map, Mali, is further-flung than usual. Drawings and photos of the anonymous street artist’s work are revealed in the exhibition “Bristol Museum vs. Banksy,” and among them are a number of pictures of Banksy murals in the West African country. Images include two figures hunting a large animal, possibly a bison, with bow and arrow; a woman hanging laundry on a line while a zebra stands by; a child staring out at the viewer from inside a a small metal washing tub; and a young girl with a yellow bird.

URBAN ART IN AUSTRALIA

Urban art project is creating some thunder down under. The Australian art collective has just transformed an unsightly parking garage in Brisbane into “Landlines,” an artwork by Jennifer Marchant constructed of 549 aluminum panels.

The project began when hometown architects Nettleton Tribe, enlisted to add 13 floors of office space to the 30 year old, nine-story garage, brought in UAP and Marchant to create visual character at the street level. They delivered by wrapping the structure in 4-by-11 foot aluminum panels that naturally ventilate the sub-tropical garage, reducing the buildings carbon emissions to the tune of over $900,000 in savings for the client over the use of a mechanical ventilation system.

URBAN ART IN ASIA

Hip Hop Stützpunk has dome many good things for the people of Shanghai. They sponsor many side events and workshop programs to support real sustainability and have formed non-profit partnerships with two dance schools, several music clubs, a Shanghai graffiti school and an artist and magazine collective that sponsors Asia’s largest graffiti contest.

The locals are delighted with the new adornments on the walls of their once drab and uninteresting streets.

“I would say the young people really appreciate this new art form and even the older people in China are much more open than in our country,” Walta told the press.

URBAN ART IN EUROPE

Polo Jeans Co. is proud to present ART STARS, a showcase of work from 51 of Europe’s most recognized up and coming contemporary artists. Inspired by the iconic American Star Spangled Banner and synonymous with the Polo Jeans Co. brand, the artists will create 3D pieces on stars made from the finest American denim. These will be displayed in select Polo Jeans Co. stores in key cities across Europe, before coming together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010.”

Sounds very interesting and looks fantastic, even if the intention is to create a creative character for a relative new brand…

At the moment, some of the finished Art Stars are exhibited in one of Berlin’s biggest shopping centers, the KaDeWe as well as in the Blue Marlin in Roma and the Felloni Studio in Ferrara. Maybe I will visit the KaDeWe this week to take some shots.
